Like a lot of moms, I spend a ridiculous amount of time cleaning up. Between crumbs, toys, shoes, books… I feel like I waste so much time during the day picking up that I could be spending with my boys and working. I’m always looking for ways to help make the clean up faster so I can have more free time to do more important things. I know other moms probably feel the same way, so here’s a few tips that I’ve found helpful:
1. Enlist the kid’s help!
I realize this one doesn’t apply to everyone because really young ones can’t clean up, but if you have toddlers or older children, it’s the perfect time to start having them do some chores and helping you. Young children actually find it fun. (wish I did) If my son makes a mess, I ask him to help me pick it up and if he’s playing with a toy I usually try to encourage him to put that one away before getting another toy out.
2. Baby wipes.
Ok, this sounds silly, but I’m telling you, we use baby wipes for EVERYTHING in our house. I especially love to use them to wipe down the tv, tv cabinet, tables, couch, etc because usually things are covered in peanut butter fingerprints around here. At the end of the day after the boys are in bed, I’ll usually take 10 minutes and give everything a quick wipe down which means less frequent deep cleanings for me.
Each of my boys has a large, plastic bucket in the living room where I keep their favorite and most used toys. There’s really nothing simpler than throwing things into a bucket or bin.
4. Washable everything.
We keep all of our surfaces washable, if it can’t be wiped down or thrown in the washing machine, I probably don’t own it. It’s just not practical with little kiddos. Most of our furniture is from Ikea, our couch is pleather, and even our rug is machine washable (from Ruggable).
5. Kid’z Katch!
Probably our messiest time is meal time. Eli is always dropping (or throwing on purpose) his food off of his high chair which means tons of crumbs on the kitchen floor and lots of sweeping for me. I recently got the Kid’z Katch! high chair catch accessory and I’m in love with it. I honestly cannot say one negative thing about it! It is very easy to use and works awesome. It easily attaches to any high chair or even a regular chair like ours, and it catches anything that your little ones might drop. Not only does it stop food from getting on the floor, but it also catches Eli’s sippy cup and pacifier which means I don’t have to pick them up and wash them off. This thing is absolutely genius and every mom that has a little one in a highchair needs it! It’s also perfect for eating out at a restaurant.
